Model Profile

Persona Name: Aurora
Genre: Psychadellic Rock
Style: Leather mixed with lots of vibrant colours and feathers

Emilia Jinkinson will be the model for my magazine. In these pictures she look's quite folky but with the aid of costume and make up i will change her look by using bright and wacky makeup and very colourful and unique clothing. The male equivilant of her would be someone like Devendra Banhart. Devendra mixes the rock fashion sense but also wears bright floral clothes and geometric shapes like MGMT. On the picture of him on the left he is wearing very Rock kind of clothing. Black leather and skinny jeans. So i will mix the shirt he is wearing on the right, with the jacket he is wearing on the left to create the look I'm going for. Her female equivalant would be LadyHawke.

Media Questions

Wednesday, 18 January 2012

After watching lot's of different videos on YouTube, they've made me change my mind about what genre of music to style my front cover on.
Watching videos such as Time To Pretend by MGMT and Two Doors Down by Mystery Jets, I think I will go for the more psychedelic approach

I think they look more fun and edgy and would be different compared to the normal rock magazine. However, as I do like the rock look there may still be some aspects of it such as leather jackets and the whole rock attitude shown in this

Contents, front cover & double page spread

This contents page is quite minimalistic but works because as well as simple it makes it look classy and sophisticated. It's not completely black and white, the photo has a tint of warmth to it. Instead of being like a convential contents page, it's not in blocks, the writing is layered on top of the background photo as well as the masthead. The masthead is red and white which stands out from the background which makes it more catchy and the readers eyes would be more drawn to it. The font is very simple and rounded which makes it easy for the eye and nice to read. This contents page is very soft which is very different compared to 'normal' contents pages as they jump out at you and try draw your attention to everything. The quote in the top right hand corner is effective as its sperated away from everything else, this draws the readers attention to it as because the page is very simple it's something different in the corner that catches your eye.

This double page spread of John & Yoko is in black and white, and very soft tones are used to create a softer image which isn't as striking because the article is about how they met so it may possibly be romantic. However to catch the eye of the reader a striking large red font is used to grab the eye. It contrasts with the black and white background to really make it jump out.

The photo in the front cover is in sepia which is quite a simple and natural colour, it's not too coloured but it's not bleak and black and white. All the different colours for the like for the Masthead and the subheadings adds something to the sepia background. Also, with it being sepia, it coincides with album artwork and various Smiths articles to ensure their image remains consistently throughout their era.

In my bedroom I have a picture of Morrissey on my wall which is very much similar to this.
As you can see, the same style and tones have been used. This is so that any fan of The Smiths will recognise this and it carries on the image which they carry.

Clothing and Publishing

My brother bought this top for himself yesterday and today I saw him wearing it. It got me thinking about the magazine cover and whether I could use clothing like this for the models in mine. Also the picture on the tee reminds me slightly of the MGMT album Oracular Spectacular and I really like the style on that and could incorporate it in to my cover.

The publisher for my magazine will be IPC Media. This is because they publish the magazine NME which is what my magazine is similar too.

Contents, double page spread & front cover

This contents page is very effective as it uses the black white and red colour scheme. The band index on the left hand side of the contents page is red, with black text highlighted in white. I think the higlighting idea is really good as it draws your attention to that side of the page as it is layering colours on top of one another. also on the right hand side of the page the subheadings are white text hightlighted with black. This is effective as if it wasn't highlighted then the text wouldn't be visible as it would blend in with the white background. The band index is also a very good idea as if people purchase the magazine just to read an article on their favourite band, they can easily see what page the article is on therefore making the magazine very practical. The Masthead is in a very simple bold font and fits in with the red black and white colour scheme. The underlining in the same font is also very effective as inside the line is the date of the issue of that certain magazine.

This front cover of Oz magazine is very unusual and unique. The Masthead is very large and takes up 1/3 of the page. This makes it even less possible for anyone to miss the magazine and as it is so big and also bold, it makes it very striking. Also, the Masthead is 3D, it's got a sketched look. This is quite artistic and could attract a variety of people just by having an arty title. The picture of the mouth underneath could also intice the reader as it's very unusual yet again to see something like this on the front of a magazine. It makes the mast head look like it is a part of the picture when it's not, it's just strategically placed to make it look like it is.

The way the text starts large and gradually decreases is also quite different but very effective. the reader is grabbed by the large words and then carries on reader as the words get smaller. The language used is also quite technical 'theological striptease' isn't something you'd read on a day to day magazine.

This double page spread has a quote which takes up about 2/3rds of the page. This means that when flicking through the magazine and you come across this page, because the writing is so big it's almost impossible to miss. Also because the text is white but has been highlighted with black, it makes it much more striking and almost jump out of the page. The fact that it's a quote will also make people want to read it more as because it's quite a bold statement, the fact that it's come from her mouth with make the reader think that she says a lot more like that in the interview/article.

The plain background also makes her stand out more as there's nothign to distract you so that you focus more on the picture of her. This page uses the black white andred colour scheme as she is dressed in a red shirt.

Contents, double page spread & front cover

I really like the contents page for this issue of NME Magazine. The bold Masthead centred in a simple font is really effective as it grabs the readers attention and draws it to the contents page.
The pictures with captions underneath is a really good idea as it's very unusual compared to what a 'normal' contents page looks like. The big black and white picture in the middle surounded by smaller pictures in colour works effectively as it gives your eyes lots of different colours to work with. Attention is realy drawn to the big black and white picture in the middle because it's the biggest article in the issue.
Also, words pull the reader in. For example, 'The 20 sets that shook the Glastonbury festival' using the word shook creates a large impact in the readers mind and will draw them in to read the magazine as powerful words are used.

On this article in NME, i like the way the smaller pictures have been surrounded by a white border. I like this because it means they don't fade in to the larger picture which they have been placed on top of. I like the font that they used for The Strokes, it's simple yet effective and bold and attracts attention.

This magazine front cover is very effective as is uses certain words to pull in and intice the reader to purchase the magazine. 'Nirvana Unseen' is very effective as Nirvana fans will buy the magazine to read the unseen text and images and they want to know everything about the band. The 'godlike genius' is very effective as it's comparing The Cure practically to God. The lighting used in the picture of him also makes him seen like God, the light from behind really lights up his hair and head creating almost a halo and this fits in with what they described him as in the text.
The front cover contains the names of17 different bands, this shows the diversity of the magazine and all the different kinds of bands you would expect to see and read about in the magazine. This creates more readers as fans of all the different bands will be more willing to buy the magazine as it contains articles on their favourite bands.

Album covers

The Strokes single album covers don't have people modelling, but the colours used really grab my attention. On the Juicebox artwork, the bold lines and red and white colours pop out and for the Last Nite artwork, again the same similar colours are used

I also really like The Cure, and their Greatest Hits album artwork has inspired me. It looks like its been edited to give it a fish eye effect. The stars dangling down from the ceiling give it an edgy look and is quite orignial. The hands cover the face of the model and the colours are quite dark.

Artists/Bands/Fashion

Artists/Bands
my spare time I like to do my own projects and as inspriation I decided to re-create album artwork from Artists and Bands that I really like

Alex Turner
The original is on the right, I tried to re create it so that it looked as similar as possible to the original
This is the Submarine EP by Alex Turner. It's one of my favourite albums and he is one of my favourite artists. As well as rock music I also like it when it's a bit softer and this album is perfect for that. I like relaxing to this album as the lyrics are really clever and it's not too heavey

Julian Casablancas

Julian Casablancas is the lead singer from The Strokes which are my favourite band. He did an album called Phrazes For The Young and is alternative rock. As well as being quite heavy it also has softer tracks on it. I enjoy Julian Casablancas because he's very original. Sometimes I think bands sound similar to other bands but with Julian I've not heard anyone like him before, which is why I like him so much. the tracks on the album are very vaired, some are quite fast tracks and some are slower with personal lyrics. I like casablancas because he branched away for The Strokes for a year and made his own album which some other members of the band also did. But out of all of them (Nickle Eye, Little Joy & Julian Casablancas) I enjoy his the most.

The Strokes are my favourite band. I love them because i feel like the give an edge to rock music, they've changed it and rock isn't just rock anymore there are more twists to it. For example their newest album Angles isn't necessarily 'proper' rock but it still has features of rock in it. My favourite album of theres is First Impressions Of Earth which holds some of their heaviest songs such as Juicebox and Heart In A Cage. The fact that I've pretty much grown up with them makes me like them even more also as they used to be my brothers favourite band. I really like their laid back attitude which comes across in interviews, especially with lead vocalist Julian Casablancas. In their short movie about their life on tour In Transit, you can also see on that they they don't really care about anything but music which is what I love and I'd what to incorporate that in to my magazine.

As well as newer bands I also really enjoy listening to older bands and artists such as The Beatles, The Smiths and David Bowie. I love The Beatles because as well as their music, I like reading in to their backgrounds and watching documentaries about them. I especially liked the conspiracy about Paul McCartney being dead and read page after page about the clues leading to it. I like The Smiths because I feel like their music is relaxing and easy to listen too, and I also like Morrissey and still listen to him too. I like David Bowie because he's so weird, his music is very different and his voice is very striking.

Fashion
Julian Casablancas portrays my favourite music fashion sense. The classic rock leather jacket with studs is edgy and stereotyped with rock. But i really like the different coloured feathers he has in his hair, which is very different. Also, he sometimes dyes parts of his hair red and blue as well as wearing very brightly coloured skinny jeans. I think he gives the impression that he doesn't care what he wears or thinks which is what draws me to liking his image.
I think I will be able to show this style on my magazine cover it's it's quite simple and not too hard to do.

I love the style that MGMT show. It's very unusual but striking and I think it gives off a really good effect. The setting is unrealistic for me however as I wont be bale to shoot my magazine cover on a beach as there are none near me. However the colthing is realistic if unusual, and also the face paint is practical as lots of places sell face paint.

Julian Casablancas' father John Casablancas influenced the bands fashion sense and style as he worked in the line of fashion for Elite Model Management

From the photo's you can see where the band took their style from. It's quite simple and minimalistic but has a striking impact as it's quite clearly 'rock and roll'. The leather jackets and simple white shirts give it the class rock look.

Also, The Strokes took inspiration from Elvis' '68 comeback special. When they performed their track Take It Or Leave It live at the $2 concert you can directly see that their backdrop is the same as Elvis' was. Also, Julian and Elvis are wearing similar suits just in different colours.

General Magazine Covers

These are some magazine covers which I really like by my favourite band The Strokes

I really like these magazine covers because i like the colours used. The red
white and black colour theme works as it's simple yet sophisticated, and I think the colours contrast really well together. It draws my attntion to them because they are bold and striking colours. They are also quite dark colours which remind me of rock, so when I see those colours I instantly think of rock. The titles are also very striking and are all different, white black and red. Again i like this because The Strokes singles artwork are mostly red white and black so as well as looking nice it also relates to them as a band.

These are another 3 magazine covers that I like.
The first one titled Wild is very unique and I like the way that it looks like paint has been splattered across the front of it. It gives it a very edgy look and different to what you would see in a normal magazine. The backwards L in the Masthead is also very different, it makes it look unusual and i like stuff that is out of the ordinary.
I like the colours on the second magazine cover, again it's the Red Black and White colour theme. I like the simplicity of it yet it isn't too simple to look like no one has put any effort in. I especially like the way the model covers a part of the Masthead. The back ground is very plain so that all attention is on the model.
On the third magazine cover again I like the way the Black Keys are in front of the Masthead. It's been edited so that they use a lot of contrast and I think this make it looks good as it gives it a darker edge and makes it really striking. Again the background is plain so that all the attention is on the models and the Masthead is in a very deep red. It's the only colour on the page which i also like as it draws a lot of attention.
